A Saudi fintech has expanded into Egypt, and the expansion is the regional scale play that the market has been predicting. The direction — from the Gulf to North Africa — is the one the regional fintech market's geography suggests, and the expansion is the first significant instance of it.
The logic of the regional expansion is the logic of the market's structure. The Gulf markets are small, wealthy, and increasingly crowded; the North African markets are large, less wealthy, and less crowded. A fintech that has built a product and a unit economics in a Gulf market can, in principle, deploy the same product in a North African market with a larger customer base and less competition. The expansion is the test of the principle, and the test is now underway.
